The From One Many Collections

The idea of fashioning one large image and then deconstructing it into numerous bits to be completed as separate individual works in and of themselves came to me while I was still in art school. Originally my ballpoint drawings were all queen size compositions that typically took about a year (sometimes more) to complete. It was hard to estimate actual studio hours spent on a given work cause I liked to work on several at once.

A 7'x9' drawing can be quite a problem as far as framing, shipping and storage goes. And ballpoint ink fades when exposed to UV light so breaking the queen size drawings into smaller more manageable parts seemed to be the only practical thing to do. And the experiment worked out well as it played out over a number of years. My most famous drawing titled: The Self Tormentor--which managed to make it to Baltimore's (AVAM) and The High On Life show in 2002--originated as part as part of a queen size drawing that took a very long time to complete.

When digital software became available and easier to use even for amateurs like myself I continued the from one many experiment by digitally altering entire drawings or variable size details. The digital part of the experiment proved to be incredibly enjoyable. Many of these images can be seen on this website. The most prolific collection is titled: I Left All My Chocolate In Pittsburgh although The Self Tormentor is also well represented. I hope this blog proves useful for anyone who might be interested in how the From One Many collections came about.
